Ram L. Chugh passed away on October 2, 2020 at age 85, in the presence of his loved ones. He was born in India in 1935 to Ishwar Das and Hari Bai Chugh, one of nine children. He came to the United States in 1966 with his beloved wife, Seema. Ram served in the Indian Air Force from 1951 to 1963 and earned a master’s degree in economics from Panjab University in 1962. Though unable to attend classes at the university because of his air force service, he studied assiduously during his free time, and his final-exam scores placed him at the top of the university. That achievement eventually led to an honorable discharge from the air force through the intervention of the Panjab University vice chancellor, a first in the service’s history. Ram joined Panjab University in 1963 as a Ford Foundation Research Scholar to pursue his doctorate in economics. Later, he taught at Kurukshetra University from 1964 to 1966. After emigrating from India, he completed his doctorate in 1970 at Wayne State University in Michigan. Ram joined the State University of New York College at Potsdam in 1970 as an assistant professor and became a full tenured professor in 1978. He also served as executive assistant to several campus presidents and later as presidential assistant for public service and director of the college’s Rural Services Institute. In 1976, Ram was recognized with the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He was very active in various facets of the university operations including the faculty governance through his 20 years of service on the college’s Faculty Assembly and 22 years on the State University Faculty Senate. Ram, who believed in using one’s knowledge and expertise to help solve societal challenges, utilized his training in economics to serve the North Country by helping create numerous partnerships, cooperative ventures and grant-funded projects to improve the area’s economy. He served on several boards, wrote extensively on development issues and received numerous honors and awards for his many years of dedicated service. In 1991, he was named a Distinguished Service Professor, SUNY’s highest honor, in recognition of his long service to the State and the University, Upon his retirement in 2002, Ram moved with Seema to Albany to be closer to their daughter, Pooja, who lived in New York City at the time. Ram later worked at SUNY System Administration in Albany, where he volunteered on several projects and later initiated and then headed the SUNY Retiree Services Corps for several years. In 2018, Ram left the SUNY educational system, but he continued to remain involved in retiree-oriented projects, including serving on the board of directors of the Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education (AROHE) and the board of the University at Albany’s Emeritus, and SUNY survey on adjustment to retirement. In his book The Power of SUNY Retirees (2018), he highlighted how retirees are a valuable asset for their communities but remain largely underutilized. He advocated creating a retiree-campus-community partnership at every SUNY campus to harness the power of SUNY retirees for the greater public good As a member of the Albany Hindu Temple, he was instrumental in reforming its election process, revising its constitution, developing the governance policies for its cultural center, and compiling the Bereavement Support Guide. Ram's 12-year stint in the Indian Air Force and his immigration to America are chronicled in his memoir, Against All Odds. His second book, Living to Learn and Learning to Live, describes his life in the United States. Ram’s hobbies included gardening, music, reading, traveling, and socializing with family and friends. But he enjoyed helping others the most. He felt blessed and grateful for the opportunity to give back to his university and the community. Ram loved his family and was deeply devoted to Seema, whom he married in 1966. He enjoyed frequent visits from his daughter and her children. Survivors include his wife, Seema; daughter, Pooja Clayton; son-in-law, Jemal Clayton; five grandchildren, Mosi, Jai, Tyee, Kush and Eloh; a brother, Om Arora; two sisters, Gian Dhingra and Anita Aghi; several nephews and nieces; and a circle of dear friends. Relatives and friends are invited to Hindu Funeral Services which will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 RT-9, Clifton Park, NY 12065 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Facial covering and social distancing must be adhered to both inside and outside of the funeral home where there are capacity limitations. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.

TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL MY TRIBUTE GIFT FOUNDATION OR ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND AGENTS (THE "FOUNDATION PARTIES") BE LIABLE FOR ANY: (i) INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, COMPENSATORY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (ii) DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF INCOME, LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF DATA OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY; (iii) CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES; OR (iv) OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OF USE, THE WEBSITE OR ANY LINKED SITE. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
