Rev. Smith's smile was infectious and his willingness to learn and lead were boundless. Joyce, my heart goes out to you. Diane and Bill and the whole family, please know you are in our prayers.
Diane and Bill and I studied at Hartwick together. Sharing friendship and adventures at the Wick for three years until they graduated. I treasure those memories.
Russell & Joyce appeared in my life when I was chosen for a Peace Mission through the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church for young adults. MOP, Mission of Peace, to what was at that time the U.S.S.R. They were our chaperone/leaders/substitute parents for the trip. And a total delight they were.
Realizing we shared Diane in common gave us instant connection. His faith, voice, curiosity, and wisdom were a blessing. I treasure that experience and have shared it over the years. Especially poignant over the last few years.
I thank God for Russell and his love and witness to the love of God in Christ. Wishing I could be with you to celebrate his life and faith. Blessings always! Barbara

Having served in Troy Conference, I recall encountering Russ on a number of occasions - and he was always cheerful, hopeful, encouraging. My remembrances, having known Russ when I was a "young clergy" at the time, were that this was a man who could listen deeply, love unconditionally, and encourage enthusiastically!
With prayers of gratitude for his life ...
