Obituary of David Y. Chow

Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

David Y. Chow, 90, of Speigletown (Town of Schaghticoke), passed peacefully into eternal life on Saturday, February 7, 2026. He was deeply loved by his entire family and will be remembered as a devoted husband of over 60 years, father, grandfather, and a man whose life was defined by perseverance, generosity, and love.

David was born in rural China and grew up amid significant hardship, experiences that shaped his strength, humility, and appreciation for life. As a young man, he left home to build a better future in Hong Kong, where through talent, discipline, and tireless work, he built a prosperous custom tailoring business. It was in Hong Kong, through life’s own timing and coincidence, that he met the love of his life, Susan. Together, they began the family that would grow through generations, grounded in devotion.

In 1974, David immigrated to the United States with his wife and young children, William, Alice, and Judy, in pursuit of a better future for his family. Soon after, he opened the China Inn in Lansingburgh, becoming the first Chinese restaurant in the City of Troy. More than a business, the restaurant was a family endeavor and a cornerstone of the community. David worked side by side with Susan and their children for decades, welcoming countless guests with warmth and pride, until stepping away from daily operations in 1999.

After stepping away from the restaurant, David continued working at RPI, where he shared his love of food with others, before joyfully devoting himself to what he considered his greatest career, being a full-time grandfather. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to caring for and spending time with his three granddaughters, whom he adored beyond measure.

David showed love most naturally through food. A gifted cook, he found his greatest joy in feeding others and bringing people together around the table. He was famous for saying, “Eat! I made it specially for you!” a phrase delivered with affection and gentle insistence that ensured no one ever left hungry.

An adventurous spirit and a lover of beauty, David enjoyed traveling and tending his garden. His final great journey came in 2017, when he returned to Hong Kong one last time with his longtime dearest friend, Joe Chan, lovingly known as Uncle Joe.

David loved people and had a rare gift for connection. He was known by many and cherished by all who had the good fortune to know him. His kindness, generosity, and quiet joy brought light into countless lives.

David was one of thirteen children and remained closely connected to extended family across China, Hong Kong, Toronto, Vancouver, California, and New York. Above all, he was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; his children, William Chow, Alice Palmer (Michael), and Judy Chow-Behan (Scott); and his adored granddaughters, Ashley, Olivia, and Kaylie.

Whenever David arrived at the home of someone he loved, he would smile and say, “Sweet home, sweet home.” Now, having completed a life rich in love and purpose, he has found his way home once more.

Relatives and friends are warmly invited to attend services in celebration of David’s life, as he loved everyone and welcomed all.
