Obituary of Bernard John Melewski
Bernard J. Melewski passed away on Friday October 7 at Ellis Hospital. He was 89. Born in 1927 on Third Ave. in Watervliet New York to his parents John Chmielewski and Catherine Gush, he had four brothers and a sister. His brother Frank and sister Gertrude survive him.
“Bernie” was married for more than forty years to his surviving spouse, Rosalind Waldron Melewski, living together in Halfmoon for the entire time. He also has two sons by a previous marriage, Bernard C. and Peter. He had four grandchildren and a recent great-grandchild.
Bernie served in World War Two in the Pacific, stationed in Tokyo as part of the occupation force in Japan. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years carrying the mail by foot in Waterford and later by car making rural deliveries in Halfmoon.
Bernie loved to go fishing, hunting and bowling with friends. He was a dedicated volunteer in the community, serving with the Halfmoon Fire Department as member, President and Fire Chief for more than 20 years. He also served as Saratoga County Deputy Fire Coordinator and for some time as Fire Inspector for the Town of Halfmoon.

There will be no calling hours, relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services for Bernard on Tuesday October 11th at 12:30 pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd. Schuylerville, NY 12871, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors. Attendees are asked to gather inside the main entrance of the cemetery by 12:15 p.m.
Following the services at the cemetery, the family would like everyone to join them back at the Halfmoon Fire Department for a reception where they will continue to celebrate Bernie's life.
