Obituary of Lawrence J. Tierney
Lawrence J. “Larry” Tierney, Jr., 71, of Halfmoon, died on Thursday March 26, 2020 at Albany
Medical Center Hospital after a battle with lung cancer. He was born in Boston, MA on September
1, 1948 and was the son of the late Lawrence J. and Mary Lou Reddish Tierney.
(Larry, his dad Larry Sr., and his grandfather Larry were all born on September 1st.)
Larry was the beloved husband of Christine I. Gerwin Tierney and devoted father of Brendan
T. Tierney (Jennifer) of Pooler, GA. Larry held positions as Assistant Cashier at State Bank of
Albany and President and CEO of First Pacific Credit Union in Vallejo, CA.
He and Chris have resided in Halfmoon for the past 10 years. He was a communicant of St. Edward the
Confessor Church in Clifton Park.
In 1982 Larry relocated his family to Walnut Creek, CA. After 25 years, Larry and Chris retired
back to New York to be with family. Having gotten comfortable with the warm weather in
California, Larry and Chris would "snow-bird" to Calabash, NC from January through March
where they could enjoy walks on the beach and meeting lots of new friends. With their free time,
they enjoyed going to the casino and vacation trips to France, Italy, Germany and cruises to the
Caribbean, Barcelona, Athens and St. Petersburg. His favorite trip was his 50th birthday extravaganza to
Great Britain where he played golf at many of the world renowned courses including St. Andrews.
Larry and Chris always tried to keep “Date Day Thursday” for just the two of them.
Larry got much enjoyment coaching and managing Brendan's baseball teams for eight plus years.
Some of his favorite pastimes were reading, crossword puzzles and playing golf (got a Hole In One),
fishing, baseball and had fantasy teams for both football and golf. He always loved watching golf
tournaments on the weekend, with a special love of the Masters and the US Open where he would
spend his days in the “Man Cave” - undisturbed. His favorite teams were the NY Giants,
SF Forty-Niners, San Jose Sharks and of course the Boston Red Sox.
In retirement, he volunteered as a driver for VA Health Care, getting our courageous veterans to
and from the Stratton VA Medical Center.
Larry was predeceased by his siblings Maureen Marohn Sibley and Stephen Tierney.
In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by nephews William (Nicole) Marohn of
South Glastonbury, CT, Michael Marohn (Sara Vann) of Watervliet, Jonathan Marmillo
(Katie O’Leary) of Philadelphia, PA, nieces Jessica Sibley of Cohoes (Bridgit Murphy) and
Nicole Lardner of Alachula, FL, brother-in-law Wayne (Cathy) Sibley of Halfmoon, great-nieces
McKayla Marohn and Tierney Lardner, great-nephews Austin Marohn, William "Fitz" Marohn,
and Liam Lardner, sisters-in-law Jane Gerwin, Albany, and Mary Ann (Gerald) Marmillo,
