My heart is broken. John and I "served" together in our civil war reenacting group the 125th New York. I spent many an hour listening to his stories when he was in the service and how proud he was that he never lost a man. His love of history and his family was unparalleled. I remember he told be that at a young age and studying the civil war that he always wanted to know what it was like for these young men to leave their homes and go into battle, so he joined the army. He always spoke of the baby sitting he and Chris did of their grandchildren and how thrilled they were to do it. He was so proud of the 1700's old farm house he was helping is daughter to preserve and renovate. I know he loved his family and he loved life. I will miss him around the camp fire. As Stonewall Jackson said upon hid death "Let us cross over and rest under the shade of the trees"
God Bless

Remembering my brother John
When my brother died, I spoke with Chris. I tried to convey my sense of loss, his importance, by saying “While I was the older brother, he was the better man”. I feel was not as articulate as hoped so I’ll try again.
In describing John as the better man, I was thinking of Confucius’ “Superior”, or “Exemplary” man. Confucian values centered on family and maintaining relationships. Viewing the Bridget/Fiona assembly of photos reminds us of John’s commitment to family. His participation in several fraternal and civic associations is well known. His work at Transfiguration is current, but I know of efforts to help a “Father Paul” who was managing an orphanage in the borderlands of Vietnam in wartime. He was always the first to call me in the too-frequent times when I failed to think.
Aristotle went beyond Platonic “ideal forms” to stress action. His measure of man was, “You are what you repeatedly do”. John was not just a “Good Guy” of “Good Will”; he did things, the good will was manifest in helping people. Constantly, repeatedly.
The “Noble Romans”of the Republican era honored four “Cardinal Virtues”: Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Courage. We only award medals for one of these, which John has. Were the others available, he would have the full set.
And as the image of “Sounding Brass” in Corinthians reminds us, authentic actions contain that mystical element of love. John loved what he did. I saw that even in his craftmanship, which is a sort of love for the work and its product.
My brother was the closest I ever had to a hero, an exemplary man.

John and I served together in the military. I admired his coolness under pressure, loved his wry sense of humor, and was captivated at his profound knowledge of....well, of everything. He was a man of honor, humility, and courage. I was proud to be his comrade and friend.
Rest in Peace brother,
Roy

Christina and Family
I am very saddened to hear of John's passing. I've known John since 2006 when I first started working at the NYS Military Museum. John was one of the founding members of our "Educational Outreach Program" at the museum. I could always count on John in any capacity. He was knowledgeable, kind, and compassionate with the students. As you well know, his passion was teaching the Civil War, and The Great War. I know the students enjoyed his discussions and unlike many of us he always dressed the part. He was a wonderful person and I will miss him deeply.
