Obituary of Patricia M. Collopy

Patricia M. Collopy, age 90, formerly from Averill Park and Lansingburgh, died peacefully on Saturday, March 13th 2021 at Albany Medical Center after suffering a stroke.

 

Born in Troy, Patricia was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Hynes Nial.  Patricia was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William Collopy and their sons Michael, William and David who all died at a young age from cystic fibrosis.  She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Michael Gardner.

 

 Patricia and her husband were co-founders of the Hudson Mohawk Valley Cystic Fibrosis Foundation where she served several years as president.  She also attended Russell Sage College, receiving a Master of Science in Education.  She was a dedicated teacher with the Lansingburgh School District for over 25 years.  She was a member of the Troy Tennis Association, Knickerbacker Playground Board of Directors, American Bridge Contract Association, Crooked Lake Improvement Association and the Country Club of Troy. 

 

Pat’s two favorite pastimes were tennis and playing bridge.  She and her husband’s love of tennis led to both of them umpiring professional tennis tournaments at the U.S. Open and Virginia Slims.  Her passion for bridge included a six month competitive bridge world cruise and she competed in several local bridge competitions. 

 

Patricia is survived by son Daniel (Kathy) and daughter Virginia, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, her brother Joseph Nial, sister-in-law Alice Ellett and several nieces and nephews including her adored niece Camille (Al) Amedeo who recently hosted Pat’s 90 birthday celebration.

 

A private family service will be held later this week.
