I was introduced to Mike when I was a student at RPI, working with Mary in the Office of Community Relations back in the mid-1980’s. Mike was a brash, no-BS guy who told it like it was, every time on any issue. Mike and Mary were so generous to me, cooking great meals at their home for a poor RPI architecture student. I loved spending time with Mike and Mary during my college years. He was a great man and will be missed.

Dear Mary and family, We send our deepest heartfelt condolences to all of you. Mike had such an amazing life and we so regret not being there for him in his later years. We will always cherish the special times we shared with him in Berkeley many years ago. The video is so beautiful and has brought tears to our eyes.
Love, Sherri and Charlie

I was indeed saddened to learn of Mike's recent passing. I came to know Mike through my father, who worked in the real property development engineering business and had continual contact with the East Greenbush Planning Board, which Mike chaired. During the time I was an RPI Civil Engineering major, I took a land use planning course Mike taught and I'd often stop by his campus office to get the latest news on the Tech Park, then in the planning stage. After graduation, my work as an engineer brought me into frequent contact with Mike, who continued to impress me with his professional competence and personal graciousness. Those qualities enabled Mike to make a positive difference in the lives of many and he truly will be missed. And I would be remiss were I to neglect a mention of yet another of Mike's virtuous qualities: as I recall, he was an avid RPI hockey fan!

To our extended Wach family,
Our deepest condolences to each of you. You are all in our hearts and thoughts, and we love you all so much. Thank you Mary for sharing Mike and all of your love with me and my family for so many years. You and Mike are the best surrogate parents a girl could ever have. Mike was the best father I never had. Mom always said "surround yourself with good people; and good things will happen." She left me in good hands with you and Mike.
Mike was my lighthouse ... he made sure of it.
All of our deepest sympathy and love,
Tiffanie, Don, Aiden and Anna Fedorowicz

Dear Mary and other family, my sincere condolences at this saddest of times. My former husband Tobie Anderson knew Mike well when Mike was chair of the East Greenbush Planning Board and Tobie was chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals. They had breakfast at the East Greenbush diner nearly every Saturday for several years. I last saw Mike at Tobie’s wake. May he Rest In Peace.

“My expectation is slightly better than perfect.” That’s a quote from Mike I’ve had hanging in my office for 20 years. I was lucky enough to work with Mike at RPI. My last assignment there was drafting the remarks for the dedication of Pat’s Barn as a lasting memorial to the Roberts family. Mike made that dream, and many others, come true. He was inimitable. My condolences to Mary and his children.

I remember Mike fondly as a student forty years ago in the Urban and Environmental Studies Program at RPI; he was an entirely approachable faculty member who warmed up a classroom with his humor and humanity. I may have forgotten a lot of other faculty members - but not Mike. Rest in Peace.

Mary and Family--I remember when Mike began the Tech Park in 1981. I worked with Mary in the RPI PR office, and I remember the day we broke ground in Rensselaer. Mike never rested until the project came to fruition. He and George Low were quite a pair! I haven't seen Mary or Mike for many years but I have always held Mike in high esteem for all he accomplished throughout his extraordinary career. My sincere condolences to you and all of Mike's special circle of friends.

Mike was the type of person you never forget. Years ago, I negotiated one of the larger deals at the RPI Tech Park, and Mike impressed me as smart and professional but also as a warm and compassionate human being - a rare combination sometimes in the business world. My deepest condolences to his family and many friends.

Mike was such a good friend. We first met him at the stroke victims group. But before that the hand therapist gave me his book to read. It was a very interesting book and I enjoyed reading it. Mike alway had interesting stories to share with us. We were recently fortunate to speak with him to see how he was doing. We were hoping to go back to the group with Mike as our leader and unfortunately there will be no more group without Mike. Mary and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mary, Meryssa, Marlee and Mitchel: Judy and I were so sorry to learn of Mike's passing. Though it has been quite a few years since we've seen Mike and you, Mike's professional mentorship and the entire family's friendship is still very fresh in our memories. Mike's creativity and passion made him a joy to work for and it's not an exaggeration to say that experience and his values were carried with me in everything I've done since. The hospitality and friendship that all of you and Mike showed in welcoming Hannah into your home every day after school was so much appreciated and another testament to the character and generosity of the Mike and the Wacholder family. Our thoughts are with you in this difficult time.

The incubator Mike founded was the reason I chose RPI for grad school – which led to meeting my partners Mark Bernstein and Jack Wilson and my guides Michael Marvin, Mark Rice, and the late Roland Schmitt. Starting a software company, growing it at the Tech Park, and having Mike watch our backs set the direction for my life.
Mike has always been a role model for the unity of thoughts, words, and actions and made a difference way beyond the visible aspects of the Tech Park. May he rest in peace.

To Mike's Family:
I had the privilege of knowing Mike through my affiliation with RPI in the early 1980s. He was a gentleman, a visionary, and one of the smartest people I ever met. His passing leaves all of us diminished.
May all those memories of happier times sustain you all in this difficult time.

"Death leaves a Heartache no one can heal, love leads a memory no one can steal."
It was inspiring to view the photo memories of Michael; a life well lived. And, but of course, enriched with the beautiful and committed Mary, all of Michael's children and grandchildren, friends and extended family, and for his passion for work and the outdoors. For me, it was a journey back to a special time at RPI, a silhouette of memory years that will never leave me, and which have carried me forward with smiles and admiration to this moment of celebration. Mary and Mike understand.
I was the Director of University Relations when the Tech Park was an incubator of an idea from George Low, executed by a band of dedicated staff, and led in its detail on the ground by Michael. I remember well the summer of 1981 when it all came together in concept and then in the Alumni Magazine "at Rensselaer." I remember it well.
Sending blessings from afar in California, the state of Michael's birth and the roots of his genius.

Mike and I met in the spring of 1978, when he was running the Malta site for NYS. He supported the development and testing of a prototype concentrating solar collector that was being developed by a research team at RPI (for which I served as a research assistant). In 1979 the research team founded a company, Power Kinetics, which was one of the first companies in the RPI Incubator, for which Mike served as the inaugural Director. Later on, Mike was my advocate that resulted in me becoming the Director of the Incubator Program in 1988. In recognition of the role he played, my parents told Mike: "You saved our son." Ever since after I left RPI in 2001, Mike and I have continued to be great friends. He had an amazing impact on so many people. We miss you, Mike.

My father, Jay Morley, worked with Mike at RPI and was his teammate on the Tech Park project. To this day, the Tech Park was their pride and joy, as it should be. My father spoke of him often. He will be missed by all.
