Obituary of James Jay Tully
James Jay “Jimmy” Tully, 73, of Rensselaer, entered into eternal life on Sunday, November 6, 2022.
Born in Albany, New York, he was the son of James Francis and Margaret Mary Soule Tully, and was a graduate of St. John’s Academy in Rensselaer. He attended Hudson Valley Community College before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1969 having served two tours during the Vietnam War era prior to enlisting and serving in the U.S. Navy. Military history was a special interest with a focus on both parents’ simultaneous WWII postings to the South Pacific. Naval military history led him to track and verify the extensive lists of ships his father served on as a naval Radio/Radar consultant, further adding extensively to the family archives.
Jimmy was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and as such was immensely enamored in his family genealogy as well as his interest in the military. Family genealogy was a life-long hobby, tracing the family roots from Ireland and uncovering the families’ paths and unearthing collaborating records.
A skilled and accomplished trade and craftsman, he also loved construction and woodworking. He was an avid gardener, truly a “green thumb” with a focus on unique and heirloom plants and seeds, both vegetables and flowers. He enjoyed many trips and extensive stays to the Adirondacks, camping/hiking/canoeing/fishing/ lake life which was indeed his “happy place”.
Mr. Tully had been employed as a Security Guard by Wackenhut Security in Albany.
Survivors include one sister; Maureen Tully Lopez (Dr. Jaime), three nieces and nephews and 7 great nieces and nephews.
