Obituary of John F. Gernon
John F. Gernon, 76, died suddenly surrounded by family members on Monday, May 15, 2023. Born on November 2, 1946 to Barbara & Jack Gernon in Troy, NY, he grew up in Watervliet and Latham, NY. He attended Shaker High School and Albany Business College. He was a star baseball athlete at Shaker, playing center field and wearing the number 24 after his baseball hero Willie Mays.
He married his high school sweetheart, Pamela McMeel, and was married for 43 years until her death in 2010. He is survived by his cherished children - Jon (Amanda) Gernon (Richmond, VA), Jennifer (Louis Case) Radz (Troy, NY). His Beloved grandchildren - Brenden Gernon, Zachary Radz, Anna Gernon, Zoe Radz, Zane Radz and great grandson Mason Gernon. His partner of 11 years, Susan Forget (Halfmoon, NY) and her children Justin & Frank Tironi. His brother William (Patricia) Gernon (Arizona).
He served in the United States Air Force as an ACFT maintenance technician and mechanic from 1966 until 1969 in the Vietnam Conflict and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
He was employed as a production control and logistics supervisor at Al Tech Specialty Steel Corporation in Watervliet, NY until 2003 and later at Saint-Gobain Corporation until 2011. For the last several years, he enjoyed his retirement job driving cars for Enterprise.
Among his many loves, he was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed attending and following his grandson’s basketball games, even attending games in Las Vegas. He loved the game of golf and played in several leagues a couple times a week. In 2017, he had a hole-in-one at The Edison Club in Clifton Park.
John loved going to his extended family’s house on Schroon Lake and spent his last weekend there, happily, with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations in his name be made to: the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital Area.
Calling hours will be this Friday from 4-7 pm at Morris-Stebbins-Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home at 312 Hoosick Street Troy, NY.
