Mat was a good friend over 20+ years. We often saw each other in the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve and at the Vischer Ferry General Store. He will be remembered long and fondly, as every good friend is. I appreciate the way he enriched life for me, each and every time I chatted with him.
I am a road cyclist; Mat was an E-biker. He often biked through the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve, where I walked with my friend, Inge Parlo, or did trail maintenance. It was always a time to briefly break and to catch up on things with him. He will still be there for me, when I am there, just as Inge still is. See you there, Mat.

Dear Nilda,
I deeply share your grief at the passing of Matt. I worked with Matt for many years in the Halfmoon Trails and Open Space committee. My most vivid memory of that time was exploring the damaged Oak Creek stone culvert with Matt and Jim Bold. As a result of our deep-dive exploration and report, the town was able to put in a relatively inexpensive liner to preserve that structure at a fraction of the cost of our totally replacing the collapsed similar McDonald Creek culvert. Note that if either of these culverts had collapsed, we would have lost both the Champlain Canalway Trail and Halfmoon's Tomhannock Reservoir water supply..
I also appreciated exploring the town properties off of Vosburgh Road with Matt and the rest of the TOSC crew. Our exploration led to recommending developing this land as the Vosburgh Nature Preserve with the subsequent spine trail. That trail has been progressing over several years, now. In the 2024 spring, we should be able to walk between the Vosburgh Stewarts shop and Summit Hills.
I regret that Matt and I never got to ride our bikes, together, as we shared that joy, separately.

Matt was simply a good friend to always selfless
and willing to lend a hand. I remember fondly many of hours of biking. Matt was always where he should, be way in front leading the pack. RIP good buddy.

Matt Shea was a valuable, member of the Town of Halfmoon’s Trails and Open Space Committee, right from its conception. He became our “field man”when visualizing future trails in the town. He was also interested in the historic aspect of the old Erie and Champlain Canal towpaths. He was a true outdoors man who promoted his interest in bicycling. He will be missed by his fellow trail members and trail users.

Dear Nilda
I am so sorry for your loss. Your husband
Matt was a very kind man. He seemed to have a genuine interest in everyone around him. He was also a good storyteller. One memory I have is of doing dishes with Matt at The Annual. While we worked he shared many funny stories of his childhood (one involved a white rug and some black paint) which made the pile of dishes disappear quickly. I hope these stories will help you during this sad time.

Matt,
I wish we could go back to those Sunday morning breakfast's of so long ago, or the Tuesday night bike ride/pot lucks, or the many camp fire get togethers! But that isn't to be. I will truely miss you good friend.

Ah, Matt - I am left to carry on the memory of the swimming bear you and I both witnessed while canoeing in the St Regis canoe area back in August, 1992. It was our secret memory, which we refreshed every time we saw each other, lighting that twinkling fire of humor as if to say, "No one would believe it really happened, but we know it did." It was how we greeted each other each and every time we met up, even if it was measured in years: "Remember the swimming bear?" I'll have to carry on with the memory, stalwart in the knowledge that it happened, just as you did.

So many great memories of Matt. The weekly bike rides and potlucks, the time he let me try a potters wheel and I ended up covered in clay, his bonfire nights with wonderfully weird grab bag gifts for everyone who attended. Matt was also always ready to help out - helping me build a craft show display, teaching me some valuable skills in the process! And then stored it in for years in his shed. Helped me move several times and so many more good times. Rest in peace Matt. You will be missed.

I met Matt at a 18+ Halloween Party in the late 1970s, where he was dressed as a Mexican and at which he gave me a turquoise ring that turned my finger green. :-) Matt became a great friend almost immediately, traveling with my husband, Walt Bankes, and me to many of our timeshare trips - Trapp Family Lodge, Jiminy Peak, Estes Park, Denver and Sedona to name a few. He was generous, adventurous, selfless and always ready to lend a hand. I will miss him greatly!
