Obituary of Thomas G. Hayes, Jr.
Troy, New York
Thomas G. “Tom” Hayes Jr., age 65, of Troy, passed away on November 8, 2023.
Born in Albany, he was the son of Betty (Richburg) Tucker, and the late Thomas G. Hayes, Sr.
He is predeceased by his father and stepfather Robert Tucker, his stepmother Maggie Hayes and a sister, Debra Hayes.
He is survived by his mother, Betty, his sisters, Susan Tucker of Troy, NY, Erica Carrier of Buffalo, NY, and Felicia Hayes of Boston, MA, and his nieces and nephews: Meghan Carrier, Amani Hayes-Messinger, Chelsea Carrier, Kyle Carrier and Rami Hayes-Messinger, as well as several grandnieces and nephews.
Tom grew up in Troy, NY with a pack of cousins with whom he went apple picking, to drive-in movies, amusement parks and fishing. In addition to fish, they sometimes found turtles two of whom made it home: Henry and Streetwalker.
Tom attended St. Anthony’s for elementary school, followed by Loudonville Christian School, and LaSalle Institute. He participated in Pop Warner Football.
Tom is known as a smart person with a calm and gentle disposition. He was affected by a mental illness when he was 17 but it did not stop him from enjoying his life, participating in many hobbies, and spending time with family and friends. He loved animals, especially dogs.
We imagine Tom is now being spoiled by his two grandmothers, Fannie Hayes, and Lela Richburg, who absolutely adored him; the feeling was mutual. Tom loved Italian culture, including food and films, his favorite was The Godfather. He regularly rode the CDTA bus to Colonie Center to read at Barnes and Noble; he especially loved Marvel comic books and movies, as well as comedies.
Tom loved music and his taste was eclectic. On warm summer evenings you could often find him enjoying concerts in Powers Park in Lansingburgh. He was the love of his mother’s life.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon followed by his Funeral Service at Noon all at the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc. 565 Fourth Avenue (at the corner of 115th Street in Lansingburgh) Troy, NY 12182.
