Obituary of Richard T. Liebert

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Richard T. Liebert, 74, of Ballston Spa, NY (Town of Milton), beloved husband for 51 years to Nedra A. Liebert, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Born in Niskayuna, NY, he was the son of the late L. Stanley Liebert and Doris Illg Liebert and was a graduate of Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake High School, Hudson Valley Community College where he earned his AAS in Chemical Technology, and SUNY Empire State College where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Math, and Technology.

Mr. Liebert served in the NY Army National Guard.

Richard had been a Computer Technology Consultant employed by Grupo as a contractor for General Electric in Schenectady. However, amongst the various jobs Richard had during his career, his truest passion lay as a research scientist for Sterling Winthrop Research Institute, which was based in Rensselaer, New York. Many of the nine patents for which he is credited include methods devised at Sterling for sterilizing syringes and medical packaging and containers that remain in use to this day (See U.S. Patent Nos. 5,256,154; 5,207,983). Ever a thinker and problem solver, Richard devised another sterilization method on his own (See U.S. Patent No. 5,439,643) and also a patent entitled “Drive and Control Mechanisms for Human Powered Vehicles” (See U.S. Patent No. 5,383,675). He built a velocipede demonstrating and applying the latter concept.

Richard loved boating, fishing, hiking, camping, enjoying campfires, home improvement projects which included building a rustic fireplace in back of the family home and a large food smoker. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time at home, on Raquette Lake, and on Lake George in the company of family and friends, including beloved granddog Roux.

Richard is survived by his wife Nedra, his son Glenn B. Liebert, siblings including Lori S. Liebert (Bob Van Vranken of Burnt Hills, New York and Joanne S. Liebert of Round Lake, New York. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. at the Gordon Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 RT-9, Clifton Park, NY 12065.
