Obituary of Jean Powis
Jean Powis, 89, of Brunswick, entered into eternal rest on April 17th, 2024.
Born in Troy, NY, she was the wife of the late Harry Powis, daughter of the late Oscar and Hazel Champine, and sister of Helen Evans, Mildred Parslow, Dorothy Sorrento and Edward Champine, all deceased.
Jean was the devoted mother of Ken Powis of Albany, NY and Steve (Carol) Powis of Florida, fiancé of Kevin Lengyel, and she is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jean graduated from Troy High School, Class of 1952, and Hudson Valley Community College.
She was employed by the former Behr-Manning company and the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing Library. She also worked from home as a freelance writer, having been published locally, nationally and internationally, with specialties in local history, food, poetry, health, children’s and general interest writing. She was chosen as runner up in the 2004 New York State Poet Laureate contest.
She loved wild birds and enjoyed watching them feed and nest. An avid hiker, Jean conquered over 100 mountains in thirteen states. She was a member of the Empire State Capital Volkssporters, Taconic Hiking Club, Center Brunswick Methodist Church, Hudson Valley Writers Guild, Singles Outreach, and did work for charitable organizations.
Jean says goodbye to all her relatives and friends, but her wish was to have no calling hours and a private funeral at the convenience of her family.
