Obituary of Martha M. Bain
Martha M. Eaton Bain, a few days shy of her 98th birthday, formerly of Brookwood Dr. in Latham, NY, beloved wife of the late Joseph C. Bain, peacefully entered into eternal life at home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, April 21, 2024.
Born in Troy, NY, she was the daughter of the late Enoch and Mary ("May") Gillick Eaton, and was educated at Troy High School and Albany Business College.
After many years as a homemaker and having raised five children, Mrs. Bain reentered the workforce as a retail associate at Sears (Colonie Center) in the children's department. Martha was recognized immediately by her supervisors as having additional skills and was offered an opportunity to work in the Sears Contract Sales division in Colonie, where she was a Project Estimator.
Martha, the second oldest of twelve Eaton children, became the matriarch of her own family of five. She loved her family above all else, and enjoyed times spent at the family camp on Sacandaga Lake. Martha was a voracious reader who also enjoyed travel, concerts, the theater, trips to casinos, and her beloved Yankees. After selling her home in Latham, she enjoyed eight years at the Beverwyck Community where she made new friendships. For the past four years, Martha lived with daughter Kathy, son-in-law Robert Busch, and faithful Bichon companion Mitzi, who all lovingly cared for her.
Martha was a faithful communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Latham, later attending mass on the Beverwyck campus, and lastly watching mass on television every Sunday. She was a woman of strong faith even after the untimely deaths of her son, Joseph Jr. and her husband. She won an early battle with breast cancer, survived numerous surgeries, blindness, the loss of all of her 11 brothers and sisters, and faced it all with quiet bravery, pragmatism, and a dry sense of humor.
Devoted mother of Robert J. (Deborah) Bain, William M. (Carmen) Bain, Kathleen (Dr. Robert) Busch, Assemblywoman Mary Beth (Honorable James) Walsh and the late Joseph C. Bain, Jr.; cherished grandmother of Robert J. (Elyse) Bain, Jr., Christopher E. (Jenna) Bain, Natalie M. (Ryan) Hooper, Lindsey L. Bain, Allison S. (Thomas) Andreano, Heather (Lee) Toffolo, Kayleigh Brennan, Terry Hynes, Riley Hynes, Michael Walsh, Quinton Walsh, Samuel Walsh, and Madeline Walsh; adored great-grandmother of Everett, Adelaide, Taylor, Peyton, Benson, Charlotte, Elliot, Nora, Evelyn, and Gianna; sister of the late Marion (late, George) Farley, the late William (Mary “Jane”) Eaton, the late Stewart (late, Helen) Eaton, the late Christine (late, Peter) Molinari, the late Eugene (Kathleen) Eaton, the late Marilyn (late, James) McGlynn, the late John Sherman Eaton, the late Gail (late, Paul) Teta, the late Joyce Eaton, the late Diane Trembly and the late Donald Eaton; and also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.
Relatives and friends are invited to Martha’s visitation on Friday, April 26, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:55 a.m. followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Latham, NY 12110.
Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, 150 Troy Road, Watervliet, NY.
Martha’s family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all of her caregivers, especially Nicole Monk and Alicia El Yonisi, as well as Joan Bishop, who kept Martha styled and looking beautiful for many years.
