Obituary of Phyllis V. Urban

Phyllis V. (Sydlanski) Urban, 79, died Sunday, September 4, 2016 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 4, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Valentine Sydlanski and Josephine Anneskovitz Sydlanski Friend and the stepdaughter of the late Adam Friend. She graduated from St. Joseph's Commercial High School in 1955 and St. John's School of Nursing in 1958. She married the love of her life, Raymond C. Urban on May 9, 1959. After relocating from Pittsfield, MA to Ballston Lake, NY, Phyllis and Ray raised their five children to be nurturing, faithful, generous and loving. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and their families. She was very proud to be a mom and a grandma. Phyllis was a nurse by trade. She felt it was important to continue her education to aid this vocation and subsequently earned a Bachelor's degree at the College of St. Rose. She served the State of New York as a Disability Analyst and ultimately as a lead analyst until her retirement in 1999. Demonstrating her creative ability, she made beautiful lap quilts and baptismal bibs and designed and fabricated special occasion costumes for her grandchildren. She loved to cook for everyone. She enjoyed travel and, with her husband Ray, cruised and/or vacationed in interesting places such as Hawaii, Ireland and Panama. Phyllis was very active in the whole of the Corpus Christi Church community, and in particular it's Music Ministry. Phyllis took great joy in sharing her hobbies with others, including her quilting group at the Shenendehowa Senior Center and in playing mahjong. Survivors include her beloved husband of over 57 years, Raymond C. Urban, as well as her five children; Sharon (William) Shyne of Clifton Park, Karen Urban of Malta, Erin (Jeffrey) Bressette of Cohoes, Thomas (Michelle) Urban of Galway and Matthew Urban of Troy, cherished "Grandma" of William (Leslie) Shyne, Brian Shyne(Stephanie Sherman), Alicia (Gregory) Sauer, Colleen (Allen) Macey, Justin Bressette, Nicholas Inco, Gabrielle Urban and Nathaniel Urban and the late Carmen John Inco, III. She was also sister to the late Thomas Sydlanski. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral will be held Friday morning at 9:45 a.m. from the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 RT-9 in Clifton Park, thence to Corpus Christi Church, 2001 Ushers Rd (at RT- 9), Round Lake, NY 12151, where at 10:30 the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be held in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at Albany Medical Center and the Hospice Inn at St. Peters Hospital for their utmost care and compassion during her time with them. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Church for a new crucifix which is being planned for behind the Altar or to the charity of one's choice, in memory of Phyllis V.
