Obituary of John Alfred Hillyer
John Alfred Hillyer, of Ballston Lake, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 with his family by his side. Born in Jersey City, N.J. on March 13, 1936 he was the son of Frederick and Mary Hillyer. He was the beloved husband of Jean Margaret (Voss) Hillyer for 56 years until her passing in 2015. He was a devoted father to Jane Stephan (Rick) of Clifton Park, NY and John W. Hillyer (Donna) of Deerfield, NH and a faithful grandfather to his seven grandchildren: Kathleen, Jonathan, Michael, and Richard Stephan Jr.; Andrew, Nathanael, and Grace Hillyer.
John was known in his community as a generous man with a servant’s heart. He proudly served his country from 1955 – 1959 in the Strategic Air Command of the U.S. Air Force. Later, he worked as a Machinist in the Central Maintenance Shop at Public Service Electric & Gas in Sewaren, NJ and Kearny Generating Station for 35 years. He was a lifetime member of the Iselin First Aid Squad, volunteering in Woodbridge Township, NJ while serving in multiple roles at the First Presbyterian Church of Woodbridge.
John and Jean spent their summers camping along their favorite vacation spots on the Jersey shore. After retirement in 1997, John and Jean relocated to Ballston Lake, NY and attended Faith Baptist Church in Rexford, NY where John sang in the choir and served as a trustee. John enjoyed gardening, gathering with friends over hot tea, and meeting the needs of others.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Faith Baptist Church on Saturday December 16th, 2017 at 11:30am.
