Obituary of John Patrick Craney

John "Jack" Patrick Craney, 83, passed away Friday, September 16, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Margaret and John Craney. Jack was a graduate of LaSalle Institute, Siena College, and he attended Fordham University. He was a First Lieutenant in the US Army and was a member of the Army Reserve. Jack retired as the Director of Social Services for Rensselaer County after 38 years of service. He enjoyed construction projects, auctions, garage sales, and collecting losing lottery tickets. Jack read two newspapers every morning and had an interest in cars. After retirement he climbed the Great Wall of China, kissed the Blarney Stone, slid down waterfalls in the Dominican Republic, ate gelato in Italy, climbed into an Egyptian pyramid, and was fascinated by the ancient architecture in Greece. Jack and his wife Joan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February 2016. He was highly supportive of four children: Dawn Finewood, Brenda, John (Wendy), and Krisann Craney. He was the proud grandfather of Spencer, Delaney, Christopher, Nicholas, and Evalyn. Jack was brother to the late Margaret Buda and Anna Mae Ryan. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Benoit and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held on Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m. from the Morris-Stebbins-Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc. (312 Hoosick St., Troy) thence to St. Anthony of Padua Shrine Church, 28 State St. in Troy, where at 9:30 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friend are invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held in Eagle Mills Cemetery, Troy.
